THE TEKAPO SCHEME.

DEFINITE STEPS BEING TAKEN. POWERFUL LEAGUE TO BE FORMED. 1 At the meeting held in the Lyceum a week 1 ago, a motion was unanimously carried, that immediate steps, 6hould be taken for the formation of' a Tekapo Development League, and a committee was appointed to carry; out the: preliminary steps. This committee set-to work 1 immediately, and will have concrete proposals to submit to the public.,meeting to .be held in Timaru next Thursday night. The League aims at securing a membership of at least 5000, representing the whole; of South Canterbury, and already’ substantial financial support, has been promised, the project taking on in a wonderfully enthusiastic way. Ample funds are’ in sight from people who are eager te see the district receive that impetus which it deserves, and which they are convinced will do morej.thaix anything has done for a great many years, to give it a big forward movement. It is not proposed to ask the local bodies for pny financial assistance. ' At next Thursday’s meeting a definite programme will be made public, including the raising of £2500 at once, and the appointment of an organiser to devote his whole time to the movement., The League will have an office and an office staff in Timaru. All the detail! have been worked out for submission to Thursday’s meeting. One’ of the first steps will be for the League to provide financial, assistance to enable the Power Board to obtain expert advice from America or England to design and estimate the cost of a Tekapo power plant. The League also 1 proposes to utilise, its funds to exploit a field which is not yet thoroughly understood in the Do ininion, by advertising in England, and Australia that South Canterbury has hydro electricity available for manufacturers and to point out that it'is the only part of. New Zealand where cheap and unlimitd electricity can bo obtained in close proximity to a' good port.
