The Africans had lost two wickets for 157 when stumps were drawn (Tay lor, not out, 104). Taylor gave a magnificent all-round display. The Africans bowled and fielded well. Essex batted three And a half hours. The Africans’ batting was brilliant. Hearne and Taylor scored 117 for the first wicket, in seventy-three minutes. In one period, they . made fifty in twenty, minutes. .
