AMERICA’S NEXT PRESIDENT.

Democratic Activities Begin

FARMER-LABOUR CANDIDATE MENTIONED. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. Received 8.5 p.m., June 17. NEW YORK, June 16. The Democratic leaders arrived to-day ready for the week of political manoeuvring preceding the National Convention.

Looming in the forefront as possible dark horse or compromise candidates for the President are Mr John Davis (former Ambassador to Britain), and Senator Rolston (of Indiana). Sentiment favouring the choice of Mr Davis, in the event of a deadlock in the Convention, is reported to be growing swiftly.

Supporters of Governor Smith (New York) and Mr William McAdoo are active.

A telegram from St. Paul (Minesota), says: The Farmer-La-bour Party Contention opens to-mor-row, apparently determined to designate or endorse a candidate for the United States Presidency, who has already definitely repudiated the party itself, namely, Senator La Follette, who declared the organisation deeply tainted with Bolshevism. Senator Lafollette has his own plans, namely, probably the launching of a Third Party, during the so-called Progressive National Convention scheduled at Cleveland on 4th July. It is understood that in the event of Senator La Follette not being designated, the Farmer-Labourites will name Mr Parley Christensen, who was the party’s candidate in 1920. The American Federation of Labour has long repudiated the Far-mer-Labourites, whose membership includes every variety of Radical, especially the I.W.W. But ithe importance lies in the fact that these various so-called third parties inevitably mean weakening the Republicans and even, the Democratic strength, and increasing the possibility that no Party will secure a majority of the electoral college, thus putting the choice of President upon the Congress.
