BURGLARIES.

RAILWAY STATION RIFLED. By Telegraph—Press . Association. AUCKLAND, June 17. Burglars entered the offices of the Avondale Railway Station on Saturday night and blew open the safe with gelignite. They stole Saturday’s takings of about £SO, which was mostlv in silver coin. The manner in which the explosive was used indicated that the burglars possessed some skill. The police later arrested a young man on a charge of burglar}'. It in stated that the police searched his room and found part of the money stolen. One half of the strong room door was blown off. Edmond Edwin Rodburue Luttril!, aged 35, was charged at the Police Court with breaking and entering the counting house at the Avondale Railway station and stealing £56 12s 4rl, the property of the Government Rail ways. Accused was remanded without bail. Detectives Cunnings, Robertson and Moon ascertained that the ac cased was in possession of more money than in the ordinary circumstances, and he found them sitting on his bed when he entered his room in a Queen Street hotel. _ _ . An examination made in his presence disclosed ttie money alleged to be part of that stolen at Avondale, and other identifiable property taken from the safe. Loose cartridges and a catalogue dealing with the working of the electric burglar alarm system were also found on him.

ATTEMPT AT PALMERSTON.

PALMERSTON N., June 17. An unsuccessful attempt was made last night to blow open a sale in the office of the local bacon company. Iho lock was damaged, but not forced. Tho safe contained no money, the proceeds of the day having been banked. Last evening a very successful gramophone concert was given in the Wentworth Tea Rooms by Mr Walter Brunsden, in aid of the Mayor’s Coal and Blanket Fund. During the evening Mr Brunsden, sang, by special request, “A Hundred Fathoms Deep,” and as an encore, "True to Death.” At the close of the concert his Worship the Mayor, returned thanks to Mr Brunsden for the amount collected for the Coal and Blanket Fund, and proposed a hearty vote of thanks for the recital, which was carried by acclamation. The Commission of Inquiry into tho question of sexual perverts expects to spend about a fortnight m the Smith Island.
