EMPIRE TRADE.
DEMAND FOR PREFERENCE. “LABOUR HAS ITS CHANCE.” Bt Cabla— Pre*« Ac«vintinn —Copyright LONDON, June 15. The Sunday papers give prominence to the Preference debate in the House of Commons this week, speculating on the fate of the resolutions. The “Sunday Times” declares that Parliament ought to debate and settle the question solely in reference to the reaction of an adverse vote upon Imperial feeling and opinion. The main point is whether the Empire and its affairs are to be made sport of in British party politics. The “Observer” says: “Labour has its chance to improve on the cheap catchwords and irrelevant issues raised by the conventional controversy between tariff and free trade supporters. The Empire s trade itself is at stake.” Mr Massey's protest against the issue of preference certificates on goods not wholly of British manufacture lias attracted much attention. Manufacturers are inquiring ir reforms are possible. Motor-car makers point out that the tightening of the conditions of the issue would benefit trade by shutting out Canadian cars partly manufactured in America. This is a matter in which firms declare that Australia is also interested.
