FOOTBALL. THE TRIAL MATCH. Thursday’s trial match, Possibles v. Probables, was no criterion of the standard of play in Waimato. Several players who luicl been selected were, the last moment, unable to take the field, substitutes being appointed on the ground. Of tlio forwards, Lathorne was the best of a poor lot, and with a little more knowledge of the finer points of the game, would bo up to provincial standard. As a combination the Possibles backs were lamentably weak, their attempts at passing being pamrul to watch. The Probables rearrd, however, combined in some nice passing movements, but tlio majority mo uuiii/j went straigiu across the field or fizzled out when the ball reach , cd O’Connor at centre. Nevertheless their display was in direct contrast to their opponents’ efforts. alker, of Ciienavv, playing on the left wmg, was the star. Possessing a fine turn ol speed, he was always in the picture, and scored three tries, which felt the impression that he has prospects oi tilling one ol the wing thieoquaitci positions in the South Canteibui t \ niteen tiiis season. Keyes and C. Ste\\aifc at five-eighths, combined well. The former lias a tricky run, <md handles well. Stewart is quick oft the maik, and cuts in nicely. On one. occasion (luring Thursday's game lie gathered in a pass from Keyes while going at top speed, and was through the opposing backs’in a flash. From the material available a representative team more than able to hold its own in the 101 tlicoining mulches, could be chosen. The Waimato High School has a fano team this year. ’film forwards arc a hefty lot (one stands over bit), while the backs arc clover, and know what to do when thev get the ball. Jheir play is a credit to the school, and to their mentor.
