BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council was held on Tuesday nignt. Present —Mr J. Kennedy (Mayor), Councillors G. Sherratt, E. 1-i. Logan, J. W. Davison, A. Boil, A. South, and Dr. Paterson.

CORRESPONDENCE.

The Timaru Hospital Board notified that the contribution of the Borough for the year, had been fixed at o-32d in the £.

Mr Cooper, town clerk, Temuka, wrote stating that a committee had been set up to go into the matter of drainage and water supply and report to the Council.

Mr W. O. Long, Timaru, wrote inviting Councillors to attend a public meeting to consider the matter of the frequent interruptions to the electric power supply from Lake Coleridge. The manager of the South Canterbury Power Board (Mr. C. Dash) wrote quoting prices for street lighting as follows From sunset to mid-night, £3 2s 6d p,a. for 60 c.p.; 100 c.p. £3 10s; 250 c.p., £5 10s. For lighting sunset to sunrise, 60 c.p., £3 7s; 100 c.p. £3 15s; 250 c.p. £5 17s 6d. For centre suspension lamps, the cost would be 2s 6d extra per lamp. This quote includes cost of installation, and maintenance of all poles, wires, etc, and supply of current to maintfiin an efficient street lighting system. The Clerk to the South Canterbury Hospital Board forwarded the estimated expenditure for 1924-25, as follows: —Talbot Hospital, £SO; Geraldine £400; Timaru £1100: Old Men’s Home £SO; Waimate Hospital (new kitchen) £167; Waipiata Sanatorium £8775; Geraldine Hospital building, £1328; Timaru Hospital (additions to steam plant) £600; maternity ward addition, £600; superintendent’s residence, £1800; Fairlie Hospital (purchase of building), £250. Mr C. McKenzie applied to have kerb and channelling made along Peel Street, also water laid on where building is being erected. Councillor Paterson stated that while he w,as in sympathy with the work being done, he thought that a more definite and systematic manner of kerbing and channelling, in the borough, should be undertaken. .On -the motion of Councillor Davison, seconded by Councillor Sherratt, it was decided that the. kerbing and channelling be done. Mr W. H. Broad, secretary of the Bowling Club, wrote asking the Council to remove the fire engine. To be returned to the Old Fire; Brigade Station. . . Mr F. Trott applied for permission to erect a shop in Peel Street, for Mr A. Matins, situated on College He-; serve. Granted. ~Mr Fish, secretary of the public Library, wrote stating that the Library . Committee was unable to undertake the cost of renting a . residence for the librarian. For many years, the committee .had been short of_ funds to carry on .with, and found .itself unequal to find the finance to provide a residence for the librarian, and suggested that the council ..undertake the task of turning the existing building into a cottage for the librarian. A The chairman of the Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the month wore £Bl 4s sd; accounts for payment £241 16s 10d; debit balance at bank £123 18s 3d; deficiency after paying accounts, £365 15s The Domain Board’s statement showed receipts (Borough Council grant) £6O, account for payment £6 4s Bd, credit balance at bank £l6 17s 4d. The plan for the poles, wmen was most comprenensive, and included all parts of the borough, was generally approved of, and it was further decided to erect 250 c.p. lights also on the corner of Park Road-Pleasant Valley Road, and at corner of Wilson Street and Park Road. TENDERS. Three tenders as follows were received for metalling Cox jLreet J. Cooper £57 10s, N. Sherratt £59, and J. Ashby £SO (accepted). The overseer reported that the shingling on MacDonald Street and footpath had been completed and shingle repairs - made to streets throughout the borough. Gorse had been grubbed on West Town Belt and Forest Street. Gorse and broom along the water race had been cut. The Library section had been cleaned up in preparation for. building. Fire plugs had been cleaned and repaired, channelling had been carried out in Cox Street, concrete crossings had been made in various parts, and grading had been carried out at AY aihi terrace and South ’lci’mcc, and tho usual street cleaning done. The Mayor stated that ho had received a request from Mr Moyle, that the road leading up the hill, and coining out near Air J. Morrisons, ho opened up. At present, tins was fenced in, and there was no access to it. 1 It was agreed that this be done. The Council then sat as a Domain Board. Mr J. G. Mills, secretary Temuka Municipal Band, applied for permission to l take up a collection at a concert it was intend to hold in Geraldine on Sunday, June 15th. Left with the Mavor to confer with local band. Councillor Sherratt drew attention to tlic congested state of tho trees on the right .band side entrance of the Park. it was decided that some of tho larger macocarpa trees bo removed.

It was also decided that action bo taken tor damages against those people who allow their stock to wanuer in the park. •The Hoard then sat as a Cemetery Board, when routine business was transacted.
