WEST END.

MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS

ASSOCIATION FOXI MED. There was a largo and elltl f\ l^“ s '\ ll r meeting of West End householders in the West School last evening, "'hen it was decided that a body lor the welfare of the district be formed, under Urn designation of the M cst End H no holders Association. _ . , , The convener (Mr W. Anderson) said that there were parts m iho district that were neglected by the Council, and by forming an association they could have these defects remedis-I. In the South End the Association consisted of ratepayers only, and it rested with the meeting as to whether a householders or a ratepayers association should he formed. He then called upon Mr W. Gibb (chairman of the South End Ratepayers address the gathering. 1 Mr Gibb said that four years ago they had formed the South End Association to help on their district and the Borough in general. -There were twelve men on the Council who gave their time to the borough, and thus an Association was able to help them, by pointing out matters that might otherwise be overlooked. The councillors. were doing their best for the borough and the Associations for the welfare of their particular districts. In the South End Association they had a committee for the investigation of complaints, and thus all matters Reported to the Council were genuine. There was a tendency of some ratepayers to “throw mud” at the Council. This he was strongly against. The Councillors were all gratuitous servants of the ratepayers and should receive wholehearted support. In their distinct only oho appeal had been refused by tho Council An Association was ot assistance in all matters of general interest, which come before the ratepayers, for example, the meeting on the question of the electric light, which will eventuate this evening. This was a matter in which Associations can express their opinions. Air Gibb read and discussed the rules and regulations of the South End Association. j

Mr Chiles said that thev should decidedly form an Association. They knew of matters that needed attention, and if they formed an association these could bo attended to. Porionally ho favoured a Householders Association, because lie knew of so many men who, although not ratooayers, had the interest of the dis iriet at heart. The success of an Association lay in getting everybody interested.

Mr Kelly seconded the motion, and t was resolved that a West Enel Householders Association bo formed. Office bearers were elected as blows --Chairman, Mr J. E. Chiles; leputy-chairman, Mr W. Anderson; secretary and treasurer, Mr.W. rt. Gong; committee, Messrs P. J. Kelly, (. Cunie, W. Tuttou, J. Norrie, W. Thompson, W. Renton, H. Field, L. X. Bi'eeiu. It was decided that tho membership fee bo 2s 6d per annum. Apologies for absence were received Tom Messrs J. Anstev, A. Shirtclilf, aid T. Palliser, who stated their willngness- 'to'join an'Association if ono cas formed

■ A hearty-. vote of thanks was passed o Mr Auderson for convening the meeting, and also Mr W. Gibb for his much appreciated address.
