SOUTH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS. With the object of obtaining various urgently required articles for the school, a meeting of the householders was held in the South End School last evening. Mr W. Gibb presided over an attendance of IS residents. The chairman stated that a number of things were required for the school, and the object of the meeting was to ascertain what steps the householders would ta\te in the matter of supporting the proposals. Supplies of crockery,' etc., for school functions, and also a gramaphone were required, but. being items on which a Government subsidy was not available, the committee did not feel justified in tackling the proposition alone, and in this matter desired the support, of the householders. In the past the articles required for the various functions had always been supplied to them by a gentleman who had been kind enough to lend them, but they felt that it was too much to ask him to keep on lending them. The crockery ai d urns would cost anything from .'.'l7 to £3O. It. was agreed that the school should possess utensils of its own. Mr Hay said that he was satisfied that the articles were required, but he would like to know how the money was to be obtained. On the motion of Mr Walker, it was agreed that the money be obtained by means of a series of socials. Messrs Houston, Gliddon, Leckie, Struthers, Phillips and Hay were appointed to act with the sub-com-mittee in reference to arranging the socials.

On the motion of Mr Hay it was agreed that a gramaphone be purchased when funds permit. The chairman stated that in reply to his conversation with the Prim< Minister, and correspondence on the subject of the proposed hall, he had just received a letter from Mr Massey in which he promised to take up the question with the Minister of Education. Under the circumstances they could do nothing more except to wait further developments.
