NEWS AND NOTES.

There is a continual leakage or disappearance of coin in the Dominion, ■ especially of gold, remarks the “Mercantile Gazette.” This is going on all the time, but to what extent is probably little known except to bankers, and, therefore, some particulars on this subject may be of interest to many- of our readers. For years past it has been illegal to melt down sovereigns, but no doubt a fair amount of it is done. It was only as recently as 1916 that the Federal Government of Australia issued a proclamation prohibiting this practice. Jewellers, dentists, and others find in the sovereign well-refilled gold in a handy' form for making articles of jewellery; dental work, etc.

The pine boi'er Was first recognised as a pest in Timaru in a white pine desk in the office of the then Town Clerk (Mr E. H. Lough). Sorijeone sticking a penknife into the smooth surface was surprised to find it sink deep into the wood. The board was taken up, when the .underside was found to be bored with minute holes, and the whole of it except an upper skin was a mass of dust and filaments. Soon after, similar holes were found in some of the weather boards on the south side of the old Primitive Methodist Church, in Barnard Street. No sooner was public attention drawn to these two cases than the boter was found in many 7 of the older buildings iii the town. It.was called the .“white piile 'borer” because the first discoveries were made in white pine, tut the borer grub soon showed that it Was able to digest a good many othei kinds of wood.
