HOCKEY.

SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Games were continued on Saturday at the Park in good weather. _ The meeting of C.F.C.A. and Cambridge, in Timaru, and Geraldine A. and .13.. at Geraldine, opened the second round of tli© men’s competition; while in the ladies’ section Timaru met Celtic B. No other ladies’ games were played, to as to oven up the competition, as tintwo teams mentioned have another game to play to complete the first round. GERALDINE A. 5 v. GERALDINE B. 3. The A. team proved too good for the juniors by two goals, including the handicap. Tne game was fairly even throughout, the B. team playing with much better combination than in previous games. Voss (4) and Bryant scored for the A. team, and Borrell netted one for the defeated. Referee, Mr T. J. Bennington. C.F.C.A. 2. v. CAMBRIDGE 0. This game proved a strenuous encounter, and the result came perhaps as a sin-prise. From the opening bully the Yellows were out to win, and within a quarter of an hour Rawstoru had netted two goals, which gave the Blue goalie little or no cliauce of stopping. Pressure was kept up all the first hale, but the Yellows failed to add to the score. The play was by no means onesided, and although the Blues were in the Yellow danger zone several times, solid defence (and bad luck on one or two occasions) kept them out. G„ resuming after half-time Cambridge made a great attempt to get even, but with two goals to spare the Yellows were able to concentrate on defence, so the game ended without further score. Referee, Mr N. Edwards. TIMARU 3. v. CELTIC B. 2. This game proved rather interesting, Celtic putting up a stubborn fight. The result appeared to be doubtful for some time, as with two goals handicap the Green and Gold were out to make a draw of the game at least. Timaru, however, played with more combination, and their experience helped them, the game ending in their favour by three goals (scored by Misses Porter, Tutty, and Newman), to two (tho handicap allowed). Referee, Mr N. Hawkey.
