KEEP UP THE BREED.
To the Editor of the “Timaru Herald.” Sir, —I wish, through the medium of- your columns, to draw the attention of the general public and the farming community in particular, to the deplorable class of sheep one sees at the public saleyards. Every year they are getting worse. Small, weedy, j inferior animals, and these are ex- [ pected to keep up the supply of breeding ewes. Practically all the best ewe lambs are sent to the works, and a few inferior ones, together with a few cull lines from the back stations, is all the average farmer can secure to keep his flock up. Unless something is done very soon to remedy the matter, the sheep industry will drift to ruin. The apathy of many who are in a position to rectify the matter is simply appalling, and I think the sooner legislation is introduced to make those who can well afford it, keep the best of their ewe lambs, the better it will be for the country.—l am, etc., KAKAHU.
