ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POAWER.

To tlie Editor of the ‘‘Timaru Herald. Sir—The above all absorbing and vital question for South Canterbury has reached a stage when it behoves every manufacturer, business man, householder, and citizen to bestir hiiuseit and endeavour to right the wrong. Our present source ot supply, tor winch we waited long and patiently, and in which we were continuously advised to put our trust, has tailed, and what threads of hope we were clinging to, have been severed during tile week by absolute exposures by two gentlemen of Christchurch, who have been honest and bold enough to let the true facts be known to the public. His AAmrship, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr FJesher) and Alt' P. RClimie (organiser for the Canterbury Progress League) make no apology for expressing their fears regarding the supply of electric current and power for the present and future. Lhe great majority of South Canterbury residents, who have all along looked to. the great natural possibilities ot Teknpo, for our supply, and who reasonably expected an investigation have invariably received two answers, Coleridge is coming, and will be ample and efficient. If Tekapo (which is at our very door) were developed, there ■would not be enough demand for power to make the scheme a paying proposi-

tion. . , The first reason requires no turtfiei “light” to our bitter experience As to the second, I ask what reasonable, thinking man. when opening up a business, would, or could, expect to dispose of all his stock before he becomes established. A business man, to be successful, must be prepared to take any reasonable risks, and have confidence in himserf. 1 am sure, Sir, you will agree that the same can he applied in the present instance; and that the demand for electric current and power will increase beyond all expectations, when a satisfactoiy and adequate supply is produced, , with thousands of other South Canterbury citizens have not the slightest doubt. ' AVithout taking up any more i of your valuable ■ space, I. will conclude expressing the hope that the public will take advantage of the oPh Ol^ 1 ” 1 . offered on Thursday next, of letting their opinions become known ifie time to act is a^Q^|g R>
