“RUM ROW.”
AMERICAN CUSTOMS REPORT.
By Oabis- . r NEW YORK, June 5.
Customs officials state that Sir Brodrick Hartwell, of London, continues to sell liquor to vessels anchored just outside the United States waters, known as “Rum Row,” despite the United States and Britain’s liquor treaty, and the protests of the Prime Minister, Mr MacDonald. Letters received by Americans inviting them to invest in his enterprise have been handed to the officials, who state that those helping to finance Sir Brodrick Hartwell take the risk of prosecution for abetting the crime.
Mr MacDonald recently characterised Sir Brodrick Hartwell’s operations as "a disgraceful blot.” (Sir Brodrick C. D. A. Hartwell is a Major in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He served in the South African War and on Gallipoli.)
