A Press message from Christchurch states that a solicitor named Lionel Lancelot Hitcliings, was arrested at Rakaia yesterday on a charge of embezzlement. Hitcliings. a young married man, was formerly employed by Messrs Duncan, Cotterill and Co. Flo is charged with fraudulently failing to account for money received by him. Some, of the asphalted footpaths arc in a bad condition to face a possibly wet winter, the tarred surface being full of holes. In fiat spaces the water 6oaks downwards and makes a pool ot mud, for people to plant their feet in, and splash the mud as high as their knees. In steep places the water makes its way beneath the asphalt, softening the ground beneath, and the traffic then breaks at the' surfacing, and small circular holes become long ones.

The suggestion that every farmer bhould have his name painted on his gate was put forward by a member ot the Timaru Farmers’ Union yesterday afternoon. The gentleman in question stated that live idea had been brought under his notice by a member of one of the local firms, who considered that a great deal of time was often wasted in trying to find out where a man lived. In this connection, the speaker said that he had often been struck with the names that were neatly painted on the mail boxes in the districts where the rural mail delivery was in vogue, and he thought that if the same indication as to the occupier of the property wa9 available in every case, a great deal of inconvenience to all classes of tlio community, farmers included, would he avoided.
