LIQUOR ON SHIPS.
BRITAIN’S REPLY TO UNITED STATES.
By Cable—Pross Association —Copyright. WASHINGTON, Sept. 19. The British reply to the United States’ proposal for a reciprocal agreement on ship liquor and liquor smuggling, was received to-day. It is described as —“In general not sympathetic to the proposals.” The British Government intends to present the question to the Imperial Conference in London in October. Officials view the British communication as leaving open the possibility of negotiating a double-barrelled treaty to curb rum running, and also to facilitate legitimate liquor shipments in foreign bottoms. There is no attempt to disguise the fact that the British neglected general disapproval of the plan, and raised objections to it.
