STUD STOCK SALE.

HIGH PRICED JERSEYS. TOTAL REALISED, 3014 GNS. Owing to the comparative isolation of Ills sum it was predicted that the sale conducted at Blenheim on behalf of tne veteran breeder Air Charles Coulter, ‘‘liawkesburv,” would not be largely attended by breeders outside the immediate district. Nearly forty breeders iiom the North Island made tne steamer trip from Wellington to Picton on Wednesday last. These breeders represented nearly every dairying district. At Blenheim they were joined by breeders from Otago, Canterbury and Westland, together with practically the full membership of ’the Nelson Jersey Breeders Club. On Thursday morning the visitors inspected the sale cattle, and in the afternoon a “field day” was held at “liawkesburv.” Hr Coulter has been breeding Jerseys since .1881, and there is hardly a leading herd in the .Dominion. that has not benefited through selections from his stud. Many showring champions were either bred by him or are descended from his stock, and some of the greatest butter-fat producers of the breed have also emanated from the “idawkosburv” stud.

In opening the sale Mr C. E. Robertson, sales manager for Wright, Stephenson and Co., reviewed the success of slv Coulter • both as an importer and a breeder, and emphasised his high standing among the breeders of the Dominion. Particular emphasis was placed on the wonderful butter-fat records made by the daughters of the bull Soumise Tom (the greatest sire of heavy producers yet bred in New Zealand) anil Grannie’s Knight, the greatest living sire of producers; who was formerly used at “Hawkesbnry.” One of his daughters, bred by Mr Coulter, _ and now under test, has produced 517.431 b •butter-fab. in. 231 days. It was also brought out that two Jerseys in America claiming relationship to two or the cows imported by Air Coulter'had recently completed records of llOJlh and 10051 b butter-fat. The highest price of the day was 200gns, paid by Mr A. M. Gal breath, of Otago, for a five-year-old cow descended from the old New Zealand Monopolist strain, but carrying much imported blood also. The next highest price was lOOgns, paid by Mr E. H. Barton, of Blenheim, tor a seven-year-old cow from the famous Silver * Queen-Monopolist strain, -but sired by Soumise Majesty (sire ot Soumise Tom). A heifer out of thois cow, by Hawkesbnry Majestic,, also made lOOgns, to the bid of Mr H. W a YpW Pi Canterbury. The top price bull (100 gns) was a son of the imported cow Soumise Lily. The top price bull .calr was a soil of the great cow boumme Jtmpress, which sold at 75gus. Iho buyers represented every province in the Dominion except Southland, several commissions from that quarter being unsuccessful. The average for including fourteen calves, was £i3 Is, which demonstrates the great demand for high class Jerseys. The imported Shetland pony stud also created wide interest, but the sale ol these mmature horses was inarved_ by a heavy storm. The top price was /'4gns. One of the ha If bred ponies, donated to the Blenheim Flood Relief Fund by Air Goulter, sold for 29gns. . The sales of individual animals were as follows: — STUD COWS.
