AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

A meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury Automobile Association was held last night. Present: Messrs G. A. Bridges (president, in the chair), H. R. Harris, J. Palliser and W. H. Orbell. RANGITATA BRIDGE. The President reported that ho had formed one of a deputation which, had mot, members of the Ashburton County Council in regard to the rough state of the Rangitata traffic bridge. Members of the Council had received the deputation very courteously, and had promised to consult the Geraldine County Council, which body had to bear half the cost of tlie up-keep of this bridge. A letter was received from Mr Edgar .Jones (London) in regard to supplies of petrol for the Association. A disevissiou took place concerning the parking of cars about the town, and the hope was expressed that the Borough Council would take early action to mark off stalls for the ears as nrooosed sotno weeks ago-

Mr Orboll suggested that if the Association could obtain permission to do so they should employ a man for a week to show people how and where to park their cars on the official parking places. A letter was received from Mr A. E. Lewis suggesting- that the Association should ask the Public Works Department not to obstruct the view of motorists when building their substation at the corner of Old North Road and Page’s Road. —The Pres'dont said he had written to the Department on the matter. Mr Lewis also wrote sngge.sting the erection of a signpost near the Tycho School. —Tr. was decided to comply with the request.

REQUEST DECLINED. The South Canterbury Swimming Centre wrote asking the Association to supply enrs to tnko the visiting swimmers ' for n run into the country on Sundav, January 28. It was proposed to take them thrmigli Cattle Valiev, give them afternoon tea at Opuha bridge, and return via Middle Valley.

It was said that the Association is not a charitable institution, and that it was unreasonable to expect its members to provide, cars to take around people who came to Timaru to compete , for prizes. The Association did not' mind lending curs for deserving causes, j it was said, hut did not consider that ( they ought to he called upon to take visiting swimmers round, the country. It was decided to reply to this effect.
