DOMINION CHAMPION SHIPS.,

CLOSE AT HAND,

At the end of next week Timaru will be invaded by close on 250 men, women, and children, to take part in the New Zealand swimming championships, which will be held in the Century Baths from January 27 to February 2.

A meeting of the South. Canterbury Centre, which is controlling the fixture, was held last night in the Alliance Chambers. Present—Messrs 11. H. Fraser (presiding), G. P. Lawson (hon.. sec.), F. J. Dunn, J. V. McKeague, P. Clark, M. O’Meeghan, I. Cunningham, O. Hutchison, C. Clark, C. Coxhead, and E. G. Cliffen. The chairman congratulated members on the energetic working-bee they had formed at the hatlis at the week-end, and on the amount of work done. A marquee had been procured for dressing accommodation for male competitors, and would he erected on the gaol reserve, while the Aorangi Croquet Club had kindly consented to give the use of their pavilion for the lady swimmers. Arrangements had been made with the Post and Telegraph Department to instal a telephone bureau at the baths, and this would be a great convenience to the Press and visiting competitors. CORRESPONDENCE.

The Harbour Board wrote giving permission for a collection to he taken, on the wharves on the day of the Annette Kellerman Cup race. The Canterbury Centre wrote enclosing entries for the various championship events, together with a cheque for £4 15s, being amount of entry fees less £2 15s claimed to be due by the South Canterbury Centre to the Canterbury Centre for the expenses of some juniors who were sent from South Canterbury in charge of Canterbury officials to the Auckland championships. Mr Lawson stated that he replied that he could not accept the entries until the balance of fees was paid. This was the first notification that the South Canterbury Centre had had of any outstanding accounts, but if the Canterbury treasurer sent a statement of the account in the usual manner and it was found to be in order the claim would be paid forthwith. The Canterbury secretary replied that he was instructed to forward a cheque for balance of entry money without prejudice to the claim for refund. He could not understand the remark that no notification had been received from Canterbury of the account, as he had heard correspondence read in Christchurch in regard to the matter. He would endeavour to bring the correspondence with him for perusal. The secretary’s “action . was endorsed. THE CONFERENCE. . Messrs H. H. Fraser and F. J. Dunn were appointed delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Swimming Association. THE KELLERMAN CUP. The question of providing dressing accommodation for competitors - in the Annette Kellerman Cup race was held over till next week, Mr Dunn to inquire and report. The provision of boats was left to |Mr Coxhead,-the Rowing Club to be asked to undertake the manning of the boats. Mr McKeague suggested that, hot drinks be provided for competitors after the race, and this was left In the hands of Mr Dunn. It was stated that Captain McDougall would plot out a triangular course in the harbour.
