ABOUT BOOKS.
(By the Editor.)
I have received from Hutton’s an excellent pictorial booklet wrapper of Timaru, in which are contained some exceptionally good photographs. A most excellent thing for tourists..
With the next English mail should arrive some new fiction, which has been short so far. Many publishing firms seem to have recovered from the slump, and re-publications are booming. * * *
The following poem is by a Timaru poetess,, in which work is a great deal of merit, as yet not fully developed. What; of the night? The night is
well-nigh spent; The dawn should be at hand: Yet dark it’s coming, for the clouds of strife Obscure the sky and land.
Go forth into the darkness, soul, and pray— If thou canst pray— That the black clouds of worldembroiling strife May disappear with day.
Send forth Thy healing in the morning, Lord! Breathe forth Thy peace At eventide; and o’er the whole wide world Make strife to cease! ■■ ■ • —MvS,
