A telegram from Pittsburg states that rain has prevented the Australian and British tennis teams from practising during the last two days. COURTS WELL LOOKED AFTER. Received 10 p.m., Aug. 4th. NEW YORK, Aug. 3. Although much rain has fallen the tennis courts at'the Sewickley suburb of Pittsburg, where the Australasian Davis Cup team is to play England, have been kept in fine condition, covered with large tarpaulins. The captains of both teams have announced that they are perfectly satisfied with the arrangements. Large attendances are assured.

The Joint Committee of the Lawn Tennis Association and the All England clubs took a referendum among championship players asking for an opinion whether the champion should plav through the tournament. The result of the vote was in the affirmative, but. is not binding on the championship committee. [At present the rules governing the English championships debar the holder from playing in the tournament, the winner of which lie meets in the challenge round. Wilding, Tilden, and other champions have offered to take tlieir chance of defeat in the tournament, but permission to play in it has always been refused.]
