SIGNOR CARUSO'S DEATH. By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. ROME. Aug. 2. The death is announced of Signor Caruso at Naples. U X EXP ECT E D R E LA. PS E. Received 5.5 p.m.. Aug. 3rd. LONDON, Augj 2. The Rome correspondent: states that Signor Caruso’s relapse was unexpected. He went a week ago to the famous sanctuary of Our Lady at Pompeii, giving a thank-offering of £250 for his recovery.
He had been living a most quiet life at Sorrento, convalescing, and sang a few weeks ago, showing that his voice was unaffected by his recent illness.
[Signor Caruso was generally acknowledged to be the finest tenor of the day. He began life as an engineer, with no thought of singing. He made his first appearance in his native Naples. M.V.O. 1907. He married Miss Benjamin in U.S.A. in 1918. He was a clever caricaturist. His principal roles included Edgardo in Lucia, Des Grieux in Manon Lescant, Pagliaccia, the Duke in Rigoletto, Lohengrin,- etc. He had no special musical education.]
