OLYMPIC GAMES. ENTHUSIASTIC OPENING. By Electric Telegraph— Copy right. Australian . G-i. <i N. 5 5; C&blu Assn. August 14. The formal opening of the OKmpic Games at the Stadium was attended with much ceremony and the booming of artillery. A huge crowd greeted the arrival of the Royalties, -ind all the competitors, led by Australasians and representing twenty-eight countries, filed past King- Albert, who was presented with an address. The programme was interspersed with musical items by Swedish and Belgian c'n'irs. The whole proceedings were markod by great enthusiasm.
South Africa and America disputed Australasia's right to lead the precession, but eventually' conceded iustralasia's claim.

King George sent a message, to the Empire's competitors at the Cljanpic games, wishing them good luck. Sweden has four hundred competitors. America comes next, New Zealand last. GOLF. Experts are highly delighted with the form of the touring team. Good judges consider English cricket to be 50 per cent above the 1910 form, arid to be now fully equal to the prewar standard. A special feature is the brilliancy of the fielding, particularly among the players going to Australia, whoso clean. 1 gathering and lightning returns render anything like short runs a source of posiiiive danger to batsmen.

Sydney, August 14. At Rugby League, New South. Wales defeated Queensland by 40—13. At Soccer, New South Wales defeated Queensland by 3 to 0. At Carterton on Saturday Waiearapa met Taranaki at Rugby and was defeated by 9to 3on the 9core. Though the game was chiefly "Wairarapu's the home team was tinlucky in goal kicking. Auckland, the holders, defeated Manawatu by s—o,5 —0, in a match for the New Zealand Hockey Shield.
