WELLINGTON, July 13. The coal dispute is reaching a crisis. The conference arranged with Mr Massey as chairman fell through; as tho miners .'■would not agree to Mr Massey being arbitrator and his decisions final, and the owners ihcrefore refused to attend the conference.

Mr Arbuckle, secretary of theMiners' Federation, said" to-day: "Mr Pryor suggests a. trial of strength. Let it come if that is the only way-wo are able to get our rights, for wo are determined to ; have them. Tho-miners still insist on the interpretation of the agreement in accordance with the spirit of the discussion. All Unions ■•willstand; .-behind those Unions which have not yet received the increase."
