BAY IMPROVEMENTS LOAN.

To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald."

Sir, —It was with, pleasure I read in to-day's "Herald" that our Councillors at their meeting, last night had decided to ask the ratepayers for permission to borrow £6OOO for Bay improvement, and I have no doubt the Ur.di will be passed; but I would like to know how the Council expect to pay the interest' on this loan. In my humble, opinion, spending the whole of the £'6ooo on improvements only would be bad business. Part of this' money .'.could be spent in providing amusements that would be revenue producing. IF, for instance, £2OOO of the amount were spent in the purchase of good -up-to-date side-show's/ the reveii..t' fro'.n these would, I fee', sure, more tlban pafy the interest on the total amount. Given the right kind ot amusements on the Bay, I am stire people'would, be rmite willing to pay for the use of them. I was rather amused to sec that Councillor Donnelly was so much against private enterprise, and in the matter of the "icetric light department advocates the Council taking a sfiop to .sell their electric fittings, 'etc., and so put a ji.iii in tim coffin of private enterprise. "Why hot go one better, .Conn.Lci- Donnelly, anil have all businesses in the town, including landscape gardening, run by the Borough Council? I am sure they could be run much better and more profitably if under the good business management of our able-' City/Fathers.—l am, etc.. DOS IN THE MANGER.
