N.Z. OIL DEPOSITS.
WHERE OIL MIGHT BE" FOUND. Per Press Association. "WELLINGTON, May 29. At the Industries Committee, Mr A. J. Hutiierford gave some opinions about oil deposits, a matter which he had discussed, he said, with the late Sir James Hector. It had been hrs opinion always that there would be no big beds of oil struck near the coast of Tananaki, owing to the violence of volcanic disturbances which had occurred there, but further inland, be-neath-the ..■■great envelope of papa, there might be found oil in large quantities. - This papa envelope had not been pierced except on the Taranaki coast where there were" little pockets ot oil. ; It might .be that.the oil would be at a great depth, because it was accepted that the islands of New Zealand were merely the hdgh altitudes of a great continent. He would advise projecting inland. It would be expensive, and:"the work ought to be dpne;Jjy the Government. He was strongly of opinion that in this way, it at all, .oil would be found, and it would be to the dominion it oil should be found in quantity. At places where there Were clear indications of faults in the strata there were.signs of oil. He would like to' feejhe Government carry on its prospecting under the advice of the best expert proeurahle. . "
