NATIVE RISINGS. "SEVERE REPRESSIVE MEASURES. / , Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn LONDON, May 16. Reports from India show that the recent rising was .serious as well as organised.
The moderation of the authorities at Delhi encouraged the mob to have resource to extreme violence at Lahore and Amritsar, where several whites were killed.
At both places the military were compelled to use severe repressive measures. A great mob overawed one quarter of Amritsar, and machine guns were played on them. The Gurkhas could not be restrained, and a thousand lives were lost.
Equally severe repressive measures were adopted at Lahore, and it is believed that 4000. were killed and wounded altogether.
This energy was not expected by the leaders, and the difficulty simmered down.
