INFLUENZA.
IN THE DOMINION. OASES REPORTED. (Per Press Aasoeiatiou). WELLINGTON, May 26. A report furnished to the Minister of Public Health shows that the number of cases of influenza notified between the 19th and 22nd of May was 29, of which five were severe. There where two pneumonic cases in Waikato, and one pneumonic and two severe in North Canterbury. All the rest were mild. The cases, according to the health districts, were as follows:—Auckland 7, "Wellington 11, Canterbury 8, Otago 3. The renovation of the Somes Island quarantine station is being proceeded with rapidly, nearly eighty men being employed on tlhe work. The Minister of Health states that reports received indicate that influenza is well in hand in the Dominion, and that the indications of a recrudescence, which were rather strong a few weeks ago, have not materialised. M> is necessary to follow a policy of caution a little while longer, but directly the position in Australia is sufficiently improved to make it probable no danger would be incurred thereby, people would be permitted to return to New Zealand. The Department reports to the Minister that ample stocks of vaccines have been prepared and distributed to the various Hospital Boards, to be available to those practitioners desiring to use them. The Department does not recommend inoculation. The results, where tried, have not been convincine: enough to Justify its general adoption. DEATH IN NORTH CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, May 26. One death from influenza in North Canterbury health district was reported last week.
