IRELAND.

APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT. GREAT POSSIBILITIES URGED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. LONDON, May 15. Mr V. Hartshorne in the House of Commons moved condemning military rule in Ireland and urged the Government to grant self-government and self-determination. Lord Cavendish-Bentinck supported the motion. He said he had completely changed his opinion. He believed that if the Government thrust the responsibility on the people of Ireland to manage their own affairs they would develop a national individuality and it would result in contentment. Ireland would become the best governed community in the Empire. The Chief Secretary was engaged in a, mere scuffle with the Irish people. Mr MacPhefson said that the 'Government had dealt with enormous patience with the Irish-American delegation. The Government was anxious to find a solution of the problem. Ireland to-day was more prosperous than any country in the world. Constitutionalism must be revived. The Government could not parley with the Sinn Fein, which was endeavouring to disrupt the Empire. SINN FEIN RAID. Twenty masked men held up a pas-, senger train at a wayside 'station in Limerick County and rescued a Sinn Fein prisoner. They killed a policeman and severely wounded another. There were no arrests.
