REPORT FOR JULY. LOSSES AND CONSTRUCTION. LONDON, August 22. The Press Bureau states that the following are the July mercantile marine losses, aill being given in gross tons:— British, 176,479 tons. Allied and neutral 136,532 tons. Total, 313,011 tons. Compared with the adjusted June losses, these figures show the following;— _ . British increase, 10,965 tons. Allied and neutral increase, 20,552 tons. Compared with the adjusted May losses they show as .follows: British decrease, 55,301 tons. Allied and neutral increase, 3,829 tons. Compared with July of last year. the combined British, Allied and neutral decrease is 262,938 tons. The British losses in July exceeded the building in the United Kingdom yards by 34,531 tons, but tho neutral losses for the same month wero less than the building by 12,220 tons, thus reducing tlic July deficit to 22,311 tons', compared with an average > monthly deficit during the first six months of this year, of nearly 90,000 tons. The sailings to and from Britain in July were more numerous than'over. SHELLED BY U-BOAT. PITIFUL "SUFFERINGS. An American vessel picked tip eleven of the crew of a Norwegian steamer 600 miles from land They liad been in an open boat for eleven days and lived on crabs and rainwater for eight days. They had neither oars nor sail. v The boat capsized four times' and three men were .drowned and the provisions lost. . It appears that' a submarine shelled the - steanier at three miles' range and sank her with a bomb after the crew had left. The survivors were almost exhausted when picked up.
