FROZEN MEAT.

THE SHIPPING QUESTION. A CABLE FROM MR MASSEY,

At the meeting of the South Canterbury Chamber ot Commerce on Monday last, a resolution was passed that the Chamber should get into touch wim tlie Prune Minister with a view to preventing the- possibility of the secondary ports being cut out of xlie itinerary of boats loading meat in New Zealand for Home, and urging the need for more ships. Mr E. G. llawnsley, president of the Chamber, acting in conjunction with the Chambers at Napier and Invorcargill, sent a cable to Mr Massey, and yesterday Mr llawnsley received the following reply:— "Have communicated with the Shipping Controller, and am doing everything possible to secure ships to carry tho dominion's new season's output."

MINISTER'S ANTICIPATIONS. PER PEKSS Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. Referring to shipping prospects, the Minister in charge of Imperial Supplies said to-day:—"Up till the end of September we shall probably bo able to clear out of tho cold stores between 700,000 and 800,000 freight carcases of meat. This will relievo the situation considerably, and by tho end of Decomber it is hoped that there will be available for tho removal of more frozen moat 5,800,000 cubic feet of insulated space on outward steamers. Nothing definite can be said about the coming year, but the prospects are that the space available for frozen produce from Australasia, will bo 26 million cubic feet for tlio Year. This would moan that New Zealand, with its production, should i_'et abtmt half of the space. If these prospects materialise wo shall bo left at the end of next year in very littlo worse position than that in which we find ourselves at present."
