EDUCATION BOARD.

- MONTHLY MEETING. Special to the ''Tiraaru Hcrakl." CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 10. The Canterbury Education Board met to-day. APPOINTMENTS. The Appointments Committee recommended the following appointments among others:—Aunat, Mr G. Hancox, master; Belfield, Mrs E, H. Allan, mistress: Christclmrch East (Phillipstown) Miss D. Manifold, assistant mistress; Christchurch West, Miss M. I. Hardey, assistant mistress; Greymouth, Miss S. B. Struthers, assistant mistress; Oka.in's Bay,. Mr T. Stacpoole, master; ~\Vnito 11i Upper, Miss E. Bishop, mistress. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. The following were granted leave of absence owing to lilness: —Timaru South, Mrs 0 Connor, two weeks; Waimataiiai, Miss D. Norrish, additional to Soptember 1. Mr E. A. Williamson, master at Duvauchelles Bay, was granted leave of absence in order to join the Expeditionary Forces, subject to the usual conditions. Mr R. J. Twose, master at Harewood, applied for three months leave of absence previous to his retirement owinu; to ill-health. In consideration of Mr T 'wose's very long service and exceptionally good reports, the Board was recommended to grant full pay for two months. RESIGNATIONS. The following resignations were accepted: Spriugbunij Mr Thos. Stagpoolo, master; Timaru Maui, Miss A. l'. Hartstonge, assistant mistress. In tho ease of Mr N. J. Caldwell, probationer at Morven, who proffered his resignation, it was agreed to offer 1,111 transfer to some other school. REDUCING STAFFS. The secretary reported that tho following teachers had received notice under the War Legislation Amendment Act, terminating thoir respective engagements—Annie H. Beattie, Leithne!d; Isabel Cochrane, Morven; Bri<nd Ryan, Paroa; Janet M. Wylie, Ross; Ros,ina L. Dearsley, Fendalton; Grace McArthur, Belfast Infants; llobina Spratt, Christchurch West. each of the cases of Waddington, Blackball, Arthur's i'ass and Hannut°n, an assistant mistress had aireadv received notice, and unless the District Health Officer granted a further certificate the Department required them to be withdrawn at tho earliest opportunity. Pupil teachers had been withdrawn from . Waimate . and llakaia, owing to falling attendances. CONVEYANCE TO SCHOOL. Tlio Department had suggested that in order to 'increase the efficiency ot small school arrangements should be made wherever possible for the conveyance of pupils or the boarding of children away from home: also for the establishment of part-time schools. The committee supported the proposal and expressed the opinion that more advantage would he taken of the arrangements for conveying children if the Department would' increase the payments, and allow payment for children travelling by horse or bicyc-le SCHOOL READING BOOKS. The Senior Inspector reported that no change of hooks was contemplated, and if the "S'.'hool Journal" was continued there was no noed for a "Misctllanoeus Reader" ; there was never a time when parents were put to so little expense on the score of books.—The report was adopted. AGRICULTURE. The Agricultural Committee reported that it was sending a list 'of schools having available lands to be used for patriotic purposes, to the Secretary of the. Industrial Association. It was resolved that, tlio appointment of an Assistant Agricultural Instructor for the West- Coast be left in the hands of tho c-hairman. Tho report was adopted.

TIMARTJ HIGH SCHOOL -BOARD. Mr C. S. HowarcF was re-electo:! the Board's representatve oil the Timaru High fo'chool Board. SALUTING THE FLAG.

A circular was received from the Education Department approving tihe suggestion of tlxo National. Efficiency Board that in order to assist in inculcating in the minds of boys and girls a strong national sentiment the American system of saluting the flag when entering school should be followed. Tlio Board decided to fall ill with the suggestion A W AIM ATE BEQUEST. CANNOT BE GRANTED. CHRISTCHURC-H, August 10. The Agricultural committee reported having received a letter front the Wainiate District .High School committee, requesting the Board to devote a certain amount of the capitation earned in connection with the rural course of instruction towards paving the salary of an extra assistant who would specialise in the work of agriculture. It was resolved that district High School committees be informed that, in accordance with the Department's regulations, the Waima.to District High School, was already overstaffed, and that to gra.nt the asked for would create a nrece-.lent that not be carried ont in connection with other schools taking the rural course of jest ruction.
