NORWEGIAN FISHERMEN

LOST OFF GREENLAND,

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) CHRISTIANIA, August 8. Seven Norwegian fishing vessels and ninety members of the crews were lost tn a storm off Greenland. A TRAIN DISASTER. Receired 0.5 a.m., August 10th, ROME, August 9. An express tradn was derailed at Aqua Tascrivia. Thirty-four were hilled and a hundred injured. CENTENARIAN MAORI WOMEN'S SAD END. Pkr Pbess Association. GISBORNE,. August 9. At Tolaga, Heini Rangi, a native woman, aged one hundred years l , was burned to death. She had been sleeping in a tent and was kift with, a candle burning. Next morning the charred remains of the tent were found and the woman's body was discovered lying just beyond tohe circle of the fire.

WANGANUI, August 9,

The lighter Dorset, owned by the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, sprang a leak last evening when returning to port. She drafted off KaiIwi and foundered in seven fa'ohonis. of water. Those aboard were rescued by the lighter Thistle. The lighter was outward bound with a full load of 450 quarters of beef. It was practically dead low wa'ter when the lighter was crossing the entrance. She struck and knocked the propallor off, causing a leak. Fine seamanship was shown by Captain Connor, of the Thistle, while rescuing the passengers and crew. The signals of distress were not observed ab the pilot station, nor by a passing steamer. INQUEST ON TUNNEL ACCIDENT. TAUMARUNUI, August 9. At the inquest to-day on the victims of the unfortunate tunnel accident at Okahukura., the verdrcsfc was accidentally killed. No blame was attached to anyone- A rider was added ichab overseers should hold a certificate under the Stone Quarries Act 1910. The evidence showed that all reasonable care had been oxereised since the Public Works Department took charge, and there had been no complaints from the men. The evidence of employers showed that they considered the tunnel perfectly sa/fe, but tha;t the fall of papa was due to a greasy hack which was extremely difficult to determine.
