OXFORD IN WAR TIME
0 MANY CHANGES. V- "..• Is it worth while >c go to Oxford in war-time? An old Rhodes scholar, G, 11. Gilford, writing in itiio American "Oxonian," emphatically . voices the opinion that, despite the many disadvantages of the new situation, it is worth while. Of tins old amenities of Oxford few remain. The old-time stimulating iu'eorcourse wkh a whole generation of'young men has gone, for few Englishmen are Mt—only a few who have good reason not to be in war-ser-vice. Tho pinch of economy is felt at (the University, for colleges have lost so much in tuition fees that thoy must make drastic cults. In many the pleasant custom of serving -breakfast and lunch in the students' rooms is surrendered. Large parts of other colleges are occupied by cadet battalions in training for t1..; front, so Ithat the undergraduate seems out of place. The keen competitor, for schools and the enlivening contact wi'th other minds set at the same problem are described as gone; while the excitement of war conditions is inii deal to study. On the other hand, the .University ciicle has been greatly unified by the breaking down of the barrier,-; of the colleges. The men look more and more for friend? and acquaintances r.utsidc college, and meet more of the dons from other divisions. Moreover, "with the war-interest enmo a gnU vrniiiing into renewed activity of 'the roliticnl clubs, and of those 'informal intercollegiate societies which sprine up with such facility in Oxford." while a now review, the "Palatine," has been founded.
