UNDER THE BAN.

GERMAN GOODS. A GOOD AUCKLAND EXAMPLE. A suggestion that the Auckland Education .board should set an example in boycotting German goods was made at Wednesday's meeting of the Board. The eha.rman (Mr G. J. Garland) caded attention to the fact that towards- ill® end of the year most of the schools / would be running out- of their supplies of paper' and other materials, and he thought there shouid be an expression of opinion by the Board, so that in future no German goods should be purchased. School teachers and school committees should be informed that it was the desire of the Board that, in purchasing new supplies of stationery this year nothing but goods of Br.tisli manufacture should ha taken. (Hear, hear.) •"I say that advised.y, because being a British subject, 1 feel strongly on this point," continued Mr Garland. "I believe that the t:me has arrived when the enemy must be boycotted out of existence in this country." Mr J. C. McKenzie suggested that more emphasis should be placed upon the encouragement of British goods than upon the boycott of the enemy, anl Mr A. R. Harris, while sympathisl ing with the sentiments expressed by the chairman, thought the principle would bo difficult of application, owing to the number of American and German goods that entered the country labelled "made in England." Mr W. Aulcl complained of the indifference of the public with regard to German-made observing . that they did not seem to care a rap whether they encouraged British or foreign industry. It was the cheapest article for them. The Ohairman: I think if publ'c men would give expression of sympathy to the action I have indicated, it would d"> a great deal of good. Other members expressed concurrence in the ideal.
