It is represented ;n the, plot that Daniel Ray (known to Raymond, the banker, his employer as "0:d Reliable'') takes_ the blame for a theft, committed by his employer's son. Ray is sentenced to ten years' imprisonment. The son, CLff Raymond, wbo (has beien leading a dissipated life, is sent west to reform i and redeem himself. Instead of going, Cliff rifles l'-is father's safe, and it is for this crime that "Old Reliable" takes the blame. On completion of his term, the old man is turned adrift upon the world. He has a daughter who is a stehograplher, whose w.ork brings her into consultation with Cliff Raymond. The young man eventua.llyy proposes, but "Old Reliable" steps out' and remind? him of his dime. The banker learns of the incident, immediately dismisses his son, and reinstates "O'd 'Reliable" into, li s former position. Little Ada. Laurence the seven-year-old child wonder, plays a conspicuous part in "The Missing Jewels," ,a play of power and mystery. Gwendoline is left an' orphan with nothing but these redeeming features. She starts out to seek honest employment, and finds numerous gentlemen, who a,r© willing to assist her, but, they soon prove to be far from gentleand poor Gwendoline is compelled to wander on.
