(Fbom Oub Special Cobbespondent.} OHKISTOHURCII, Nw. 11. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan meeting was continued to-day in weather that furnished some very varied samples. A hot nor'-west wind was blowing in the early part of the afternoon and clouds of dust were flying. Later on, the wind" dhanged- to south-west and before the end of the day heavy rain" fell. The attendance was not up to the standard of the previous days, and the totalisatov investments showed a decrease from £35,570 to £32.850. • . . ' There were nine starters in. the Suburban Hurdle Handicap, for which -Rustic,, Otatara,' Parable and Ngatirunui were best backed. , The race was practically confined, to the placed horses, Ngatiranui, Rustic and Otatara. The first named led in the early stages but then dropped back, and Rustic-and Otatara made the running. In the straight Ngatiranui put in his claim, and once over the; last hurdle drew away and won easily by two lengths from Rustic, who was four lengths in. front of Otartar with. Andrea and Parable next.

The form shown by Asterias earlier in the meeting made him favourite for the Spring Nursery with. Sir Geo. Clifford's pair, Holiday .and' Adjutant next in request. , Sutala and Samisen were quickest to begin, and the former led practically iill tlie way. Inside the distance Asterias put in a strong challenge and soon had Samiesen beateii but obuld, make no impression on Sutala, who won in good style. Sutala; is the first of Elysian's: stock to win, and with the wind behind him he put- up the very fast time of 47_4-ssec. for four furlongs under his weight of 9.2. Asterias put up a capital performance. He is undoubtedly a very good colt. Happiness, and Bonny Dream were nest behind the placed horses. '

Tile Avon Welter Handicap brought cut a good fiekl of sixteen of wiibm. Bimeteiv, iioldstroke and Shaki -were best supported. The wind was at its worst wnen this race was run and it was almost impossible to - distinguish* colours.- At the start Ratal was one ofthe quickest to begin, and Bimeter, whose form in the Stewards' Handicap rtiacle his chance in ' this event look really good,: was with h.m when they reached the course proper. This pair looked like hav.ng the finish to themselves, when Vocation appeared on the scene, and finishing very strongly soon drew clear and /won le.surely from Bimeter, -who just beat Rcva.l for second place. Golden King. Pariform and Bold Stroke were next to finish. Leading Lady and Bonny Bigg were badly left. The winner is a half by Birkenhead, to Reputation, and proved h:ms6lf a vei'y good sprinter by running the distance in ,lmin 15 2-ssecs. Reputation, Balboa, Wai'steip, and Merry Roe' were backed in tfiiat order for the Canterbury Cup. The -Start

was effected before most expects ed it Warstep at once' went to the front and had a big lead until six furlongs from home, where Merry Roe was running second. There' ' Reputation began to morve up, with Balboa following him. In the straight Reputation put in a great run and won ih good stylo from Warstep, wiiih Balboia three lengths sway. No official time was taken, but private watches made it 4min. 2 sees. Six* George Clifford's pair, Court Martial and Snapdragon finished first and second in the Oaks, after the' latter had made the pace all the way. There were seventeen starters for .the Jockey Club Handicap, Indigo and John Barleycorn being almost equally supported, First Glance, Hyettus, and Pavlova being next in order. Each one of these at one stage or other of the proceedings could be seen in the fighting line and John Barleycorn, a son of Sarto, beat Rina.xLo, after a great race. Indigo, a head away third, was a half-length ahead of Fabrikoff, with Chillies, Hyettus and Pavlova well up. N Although the Randolph Handicap produced the biggest field of the day, the public had no hesitation about making Ardent tlhe favourite. The resu.t; showed that they were quite right, i oi " h 0 was the smartest to begin and, leading all the way, won very easily from Meltcihikoff. Fire God, who was third, would have paid a very big divident had he run second Kam'nohe, Sartorze and Philadelphia finished behind the placed horses. The last race of ''the ' day, the ? Otaio Plate, was a very interesting contest. Ringforin wais always in a good position, but he wa<s all out to beat Maniaroa, who did not have a good passage.
