GERMAN FORCE. IN EASTERN PRUSSIA. i CHECK RUSSIAN PROGRESS. (High Commissioner's Cable.) LONDON,, Sept, 3. In the southern portion of 'Eastern Prussia tho Germans made a'furious attack in superior numbers upon the Russian trbops comprhiing two armies, who were exposed to the terrific fir© of heavy artillery. The Russians suffered severe lasses. Among tho killed was the commander of the army General Sautsonoff. '1 lie reverse was mainly duo to the superiority of.the German guns from Thorn and Graudenz. The reverse cannot, seriously alljH-t operations. The Russian offensive continues in tho western portion of Eastern Prussia. A battle "'as fought, near Osterlode with the reinforcements which tho highly-developed reticulation of the German railways had made it possible to throw into the fighting line. PETROGRAD, Sept. 3. Olfic a'i.—The Ri'.ss ans are maintaining a continuous otl'eusive. INVASION OF PRUSSIA. The Russian cavalry has penetrated far into the interior of East Prussia, destroying tho German communications and oicupy'iig Ivors-lien. near the So'dau. Tii-> Germans remain inactive. A st>rie at Kon gsberg was unsuccessful. The "Xovne Yrcinya" gives circumstantial details of German atrocities and the burying of Russian wounded.
