FOOTBALL.

* FRIENDLY GAMES." Two animal friendly games were played at the. Athletic Grounds yesterday afternoon. There was a' fairly good attendance, and a collection on behalf of the Poor Relief Fund met with a liberal response. __ The first game was between Carriers and Railway, and served as a. curtaia raiser to the "piece de resistance," C.F.C.A. v. Post Office. The earlier game was of a decidedly humorous nature. The other contest was well fought, and provided a fairly good display. Results are as follows: Carriers (S) v. Railway (0). The Government men were "not- too well represented, and early showed inferiority to their opponents. The latter, however, did not take advantage of many •opportunities, and finally finished with a margin of 8 points! Two tries were secured, one of" which was converted. Mr .1. McMillan refeered and controlled the game in the proper spirit—he did not carry a hook of rules in his pocket. For the winners Munro (2), Manning and Davidsoii were most in evidence, while Dickson and Chilian played an admirable uphill game for the losers. C.F.C.A. (6) v. Post- Office (3). Considerable interest was manifested" in this game, and rivalry was keen, as the Civil Service men had captured the banner for the past few years, and were determined not to lose it, but when the game was concluded the trophv was handed over to the mercantiles' captain. • In the first spell Post Office faced the sun, and high kicking l\v the opposing hacks liajl them in trouble. Safe play by Mill's, the Government full back, saved the situation. After a period of even play, the game rested in the C.F.A. twenty-five, where from a penalty kick Flett safely found the uprights. The pace became warm, and I passing bv C.F.A. got down to their ! opponents' twenty-five. From a throwin Braeefield cleverly cut in and reached the line, where he was held up. He passed out. and Davey secured the oval and fell across the lino. Annand sighted the goal posts in the wronr; direction. The interval was signalled immediately. The second spell was embarked upon with much vim, and the veterans on both sides becran to feel the pace. In midlield C.F.A. secured a mark, and from a few yards inside half-way Braeefield drop-kicked a splendid goal. The commercial men renewed the bombardment, hut the Government officials kept their fortress intact. Actual time came with C.F.A. in the lead, but extra time was allowed, presumably to give P.O. a sporting chance of retaining the flag. Post Office tried hard, and lost one or two splendid chances through over-eagerness. Mittvey made a desperate attempt to rally his army for a. final fusilade, but the defenders were equal to the occasion. Mr H. IT. Fraser controlled the game. "WATMATE Y. NORTH OTAGO. Tliis representative match was played yesterday afternoon at M'aimale. and resulted in a win for the r'sitors by eight points to six. 'iV.-imate led ,at the intervVi by six to nil. but in the second spell the Ofcagn men .-.cored a try ail'! a ,"nal front a penalty which gave them the l°ad. The teams were very eveplv match >l. ih« vis tors having a considerable advantage in r.vordupois.
