The Baptist Missionary Society has received advice from Matadi, dated middle of February, showing that after peace had been declared, following Mr BowskilFs efforts at mediation, Portuguese officials arrested a number of native Christians. The effect was electrical. War was renewed. San Salvador burnt, and the Portuguese were driven within the fortress at Beoregids. They were short of water, and the insurrectionists shot everyone trying to reach' water. The whole country was excited. Mr BowskiU told Paulo, a Portuguese official in charge of the fortress, that his action had inflamed the country, and Paulo detained Mr Bowskill.
