SACRIFICE A WORKER. Yesterday 200 weavers r.t. Gruthar. -.road refused to work while Miss Bury remained. To-day Miss Bury left and the weavers resumed work. STRIKE AT ABERMAIN MINE. SYDNEY, Jan. 21. The men of tho Absrmain colliery have struck, demanding improved conditions. Over five hundred hands are idlo. A delegate to tho Board endorsed the stoppage. LITHGOW IRONWORKS. STRIKERS UNREASONABLE. The mediator in the Lithgow ironworks strike failed to secure a settlement. Mr Hoskins offered to discharge all the hands employed since the strike began. Tho Srriko Committee demanded the discharge of all excepting tho necessary staff to carry on tho works. Neither side, would give way further. Tho mediator, in a letter to Mr Hoskins, declared that the men's demand was unfair and unreasonable, and that they were badly advised. He offers to resume mediation if the. men will reconsider their decision. The Melbourno Tramway Employees Association has decided that each member shall contribute Is 6d weekly to tho support of the Brisbane strikers. The Perth " Daily strike has been settled. Tho proprietors accepted the Journalists Association's terms and the whole staff has been reinstated. The Brisbane- coal-workers and lightermen's dispute lias been settled. The employees agreed to tlio reduction of the wprking hours fixed bv .the AVages Board from sixty to fiftyfive weekly. The Newcastle Bench imposed sixty shillings damages against each of fiftysix millers for breaking the agreement not to strike . without twenty-eight days' notice. BALLOTS FAVOUrTstRIKES. LONDON, Jan. 24. The Thames Shipbuilding Company's employees, by 'ballot, declined to accept an increase of working hours and reduction of wages. Enginemen and stokers of South Yvales collieries ballotted in favour of a strike for increased wages. This threatens a stoppage of the mines on the Ist March, apart from any action taken by the miners. PREFERENCE ADVOCATE. LONDON, Jan. 24. A firm claiming to be tho largest shippers of Welsh tin plates to Australasia telegraphed to Mr Bond, Unionist candidate for Carmarthen, on tb,o eve of the bye-election, that as Aiistralia and Australian workers were, anxious to confine their trade to the Motherland, the electors should choose Mr Bond, to help in securing Imperial and Colonial preference.
