TRACTION-ENGINE TRAFFIC.

THE COUNTY CONFERENCE. The Mackenzie County Council yesterday received a letter from the \\ airtate"Council, advising that a Gontereuce in regard to heavy-traffic by-laws will be held in Timaru on February 18th 'The Chairman said he did not feel inclined to tinker with these by-laws any more. It would be difficult to <lo anything further until they knew the decision of the Appeal Court on the cases which it was dealing with. . Mr Guthrie and Mr A. S. Smith both thought it desirable to be represented at the conference. The Chairman said the only alteration in the bv-iaw that he could suggest was that thoy should give a concession, in the license fee for every trailer buut with wheels which did not "track."

Mr Guthrie thought they might with advantage make some alteration in the distribution of the loads carried, so that there would not be so much wear and tear on tho roads. ■■ The weight should be reduced. Mr A. S. Smith said lie had been compelled to alter his opinion in regard to the traction engines, and was now satisfied that they did a good deal of damage to the roads. Mr Irving said that traction engines and motor cars should not have the use of the roads as they paid no rates. The Chairman and Mr Irving were appointed delegates to attend the conference, and were authorised to support a reduction of £2 10s a truck in tho license fee for all trucks, the wheels of which do not track; also to vote for a limit in the load carried, to 12 tons.
