Rev. D. C. Bates' summary and forecast: —"The weather has been warm and hazy over the North Island, and northernmost parts of the Sooth Islad, bat showerv weather now prevails elsewhere. Squally northerly and westerly winds prevailed in Cook and Fovcaus Straits. During the night the barometer fell everywhere, but has commenced to rise in the southernmostdistricts. Present indications are for changeable weather, misty and showery conditions extending northwards. and rain may be expected soon in most Parts of the country. Strong Iywfnds and a rising barometer are probable in the south, and westerly winds and unsteady barometer in the north'."

A vocal and instrumental concert is to be given in the Hospital grounds tomorrow afternoon, in aid of the gramaphone fund for the Talbot Hospital. The production of the comic opera 'Boccaccio," to be staged at Geraldine next Thursday (Feb. 9th) under the auspices of the Geraldine District Band, is causing great interest in that district. The members of the band are vigorously working to make the visit a success. ' The Operatic Societv hold the final rehearsal next Monday, at their rooms.

A heavy rain fell all over South Canterbury yesterday, and a low temperature caused the western ranges to be well whitened. The rain would be unwelcome to farmers in the thick of harvest; and the cold would be apt to be injurious to late shorn sheep. The weekly meeting of the Hope of Waimataitai Lodge, 1.0. G.T. was held Oi. Wednesday night, Bro. Emmerson C.T. presiding. Correspondence was received and dealt with from the Grand Lodge, District Lodge, and other sources. The various officers' reports for the past quarter showed the lodge to be in a flourishing condition. From the other cases four boxes of velveteen had been stolen, one box being taken away altogether, and the other three left minus their contents.
