Buxton, M.P. for Temuka. MR MASSEY'S LIBEL SUIT. A preliminary phase of the action Massev v. "New Zealand Times," a claim "for £2OOO damages for alleged libel, was before the Chief Justice at Wellington yesterday, when the plaintiff's solicitor asked to have the case tried by a special jury, on the ground that expert evidence would have to be culled. The application was refused.
FOR THE QUEEN'S NAMESAKES. The Mayoress of Wellington, Mrs Wilford, has received a letter and circular from Lady Mary Trefusis, of Porthgwidden, Cornwall, who is acting on the executive dealing with Queen Mary's Coronation gift from the Maries of tha British Empire. Lady Trefusi.H asks for co-operation, in that sho few- that the Maries of New Zealand woraa wish to he represented in this mcmient, which includes the whole Empire. Mrs Wilford proposes to close th- list by March Ist, so that the money collected may be sent Home by Mav. The circular states that it is proposed that the gift shall take the fer_i either of a personal ornament or a sura of money to bo placed at the Queen's disposal. Donations will .be limited from one penny to one pound, and confined, as has already been notified, to those bearing the name of Mary, Maria, May, Marian, or MariGn«-. A list of contributors will "be kept, but not the amount given by tnch.
