Speaking to t the motion Cardinal Moran said that many of the champions of Imperialism and Empire Day were avowed enemies of the church. FEDERAL REFERENDA*. SYDNEY, Jan. 26. Mr Holman, New South Wales Attorney General, states that he is quite in accord with the Federal Government as .far as the referendum related to effective arbitration, the new protection, and the nationalisation of monopolies. These were planks in the labour platform. As far as the proposals went beyond these planks, he was opposed "to them, and would advocate their rejection. Mr Verran, Premier of South' Australia, states that ho and his colleagues are entirely "in favour of the referenda proposals, as they will enable Labour Governments to evado the obstructive tactics of nominee Legislative Councils. Received 9.25 p.m., Jan. 20tH. ANNIVERSARY DAY. Tlie Anniversary Day holiday was spoiled by incessant lieavy rain. Tho single sculls at the Anniversary Regatta was won by T. Kemp (scratch) S. Pearce (35sec behind) third. The Naval Brigade and Fire Brigade crews annexed the service whalers 1 races. All other sporte, including the Rand wick races and interstate cricket, were postponed. A LABOURITE ON THE CLASSICS. PERTH, Jan. 26. , In the Assembly, Mr Underwood, a Labour , member, discussing. the University Bill, condemned the spending of money on teaching the classics and music. They did not want Latin, and there was nothing in Plato. University men were always in the rear. It was easier for a porcupine to go backwards through a canvas hoso than for a University man to go into politics.
