SOUTH CANTERBURY CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

SECOND DAY. Tho sports mooting of tho South Canterbury Caledonian Society for 1011 lias come aud gone, and it can only bo written up in ona way # txamDiy t aa.tfe decided success. Tliere was littlo room for fault-finding anywhere, and tho directors and officials aro to bo coAgi'atttlated on the success achieved. Shoy have demonstrated very clearly &iiat thoy know how to run a championship meeting, and while they have uoco credit to themselves they have done honour to the town, for visitors from far and near were loud in their praises of the gathering., I Tho attendance on the second day is never so large as on the first day, but it was remarkably good.. On Monday night, arid in the early hours of yesterday morning, rain fell heavily, and the spirits of those interested in the meeting fell to zero; but by 8 o'clock there was promise of a line day, which promise Was amply fulfilled, for the weather was perfect-all day. The receipts yesterday totalled £220, as compared, with £l4O for the corresponding day of last year, details being as follows:—-Main gate £126, railway£'33, stand' £32, programmes £l9. Rouglily. speaking it is anticipated that £3OO net' profit will be made out of the meeting—a result whicli cannot be considered as other than highly satisfactory. The special trains wliich ran. out to the ground yesterday were well patronised, and' vehicles of all sorts wliich plied for hire between town and the scene of the day's festivities also came in for a good share of patronage. Better- music than that ; supplied at the sports, this year hus seldom beeU heard there. The did 'well in this connection, while the Gatrison Band und'er Bandmaster Schnack fairly excelled themselves. . The sports themselves were generally speaking of a= high order of merit. Holway carried off the 100 yards championship, beating J\' Currie by three yards, but in the only other event iri whicli lie , competed—the 100 yards Grand Caledonian Handicap—he had to be content with fourth place in the final "heat. Campbell again showed splendid form in tho distance events, winning tho mile championship with ease, and annexing, the 880 yards handicap from 15 yards in the splendid time of 1.57. Trembath, though run- i ning bettor than even 'time from i scratchy could make no impression on ; the big man. The 440 yards cham- i pionship drew only two I McLachlan and Trembath—and it was i a rather disappointing raeo, McLach- i lan running as though he knew Trem- / bath was his master, and the time was only modorato for men of such class.. In the half-milo amateur handicap R. A. Sinclair scored his first win on the Timaru sports ground, and his victory, as a local boy, was very popular. ■ Opio again displayed splendid form in the amateur events, histimes being , much faster than usually i put up in this class of races in South Canterbury. Tho music and dancing was again very good, and the catcli-as-catch-can wrestling was another at-. ' tractive feature. The high jumping i yesterday was even better than that of l ithe first day, George Campbell clearing l-the'tar at 6ft. • ;The vaulting was i also an improvement on that of the I previous day, G. Campbell, and D. O'Connell each getting over I,oft lOin, and the all ro.und display , of vaulting being the best ever seen on theground. The cycling was somewhat more interesting'than on tho opening day, fine riding and exciting finishes being witnessed, • and there were no accidents. The recent attention do-, voted to the track enabled the cyclists to register times which compared favourably with the general run of local meetings. No rider stood out as Sutherland and one or two others used to do, but the general average of the }' competitors was- probably" 1 as good as ever seen here. >. 'P. OfShea was the most vsucessful competitor, his clever pedalling and 4 well-timed sprints show-ing-marked improvement on his previous form. Donald," one of a trio of ■rt'sitors. from Palmerston North, . also displayed fine form from back, marks, his-win' in the three mile being particularly well deserved. Taking the two days together, it may be safely said that the 1911 games attracted, a much better class of competitors than ever before, and the performances registered sliowod a corresponding improvement. .With one or two exceptions the handicapping was wonderfully good, and Mr Kalaugher has perhaps never been more successful than in making what will probably be his last'adjustments for the Caledonian Society.
