A GREAT CUP RACE. Received 7.15 p.m., Oct. 15th. CAULFIELD. Oct. 15. A summer day with bright sunshine drew a large crowd for the final day of the Caulfield meeting. Visitors crowded in from all parts of the State, and it was altogether one of the most brilliant Caulfield Cup days. Lord Carmichael attended with a Government House party. The race for the big prize of the meeting was never attended by more excitement, and it had never been regarded as a more open race. A dozen horses stood out with good chances, and all were fancied. Oiivaster, on the strength of Wednesday's race in the Eclipse Stakes against Master Soult, was most favoured. W hen the harrier was raised punctually at three o'clock, the largest crowd ever witnessed on the course saw the fastest Caulfield Cup race to date, Poseidon's record being beaten by a quarter of a second. Near home Oiivaster was loudly proclaimed the winner, bat Flavinius, finishing strongly, whipped past and was brought in amid excitement. Eric, Call Bay, Iliad and idyll fell, but their jockeys were unhurt. OBY HURDLES, of 200 sovs: 2 miles.—Concave 10-9 1, Daka 9-o 3. Seven others started. Norlev, Daka and Concave were always leading. Approaching the turn Eyeglass took command from Oiivaster. who was followed by Apple Pie, Sequarious. ITavinius. Danaus, Captain White. Eyeglass led round the uirn from Oiivaster. Apple Pie and Flavinius coming fast. Oiivaster led at the distance from Flavinius. Apple P'e and Britain.
