"RINGING IN."
IN ATHLETICS. The fate of the compietitior who tries to impose upon the New Zealand Athletic Union is not a. pleasant one. A case which, came before the local Centre in Timaru yesterday shows how strictly the officials deal with attempts at "ringing-in." Last year a competitor ran under the name of C. Johnson at the Pleasant Point meeting, winning £lO and a gold medal. Such a, fine performance, for a now •man, made the Centre secretary suspiicijoits. Mr "Johnson" was billed to run at Waimate, but evidently became frightened and did not turn up. An anonymous letter, received from Cliristchurch later, said that the man was really J. E. Johnson, a- crack North Island runner, and when Mr Kalaugher made enquiries he ascertained from the police that the information was quite correct. Johnson is now in Carterton working on a oow farm, and in reply to a letter from the Centre has promised to refund the £lO and the gold medal. If he does not do so within a specified date he will hear more about it.
