The police are investigating the death of Madam Delavan, whose husband is in New Zealand. Mr Smyth was leaving the shop but had scarcely crossed the threshold when he fell forward on his face. He was picked np cut and bleeding about the fate and taken back to the shop. He was still alive but expired before a medical man who was summoned could arrive.

WELLINGTON, August 13. During the children's hospital collection procession to-day Mr George R. Fail, proprietor of a restaurant on Lambton Quay, was thrown from his pony cart in Willis street through the animal slipping on the wet tram rails. One of the wheels of the cart passed over his head. His skull was fractured and he is in a serious condition.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. DUNEDIX. August 14. A single man named Eric Smail, residina in Castle street, is now in the hospital suffering from the effects of poison said to be self-administered. According to a statement made bv Mr Steve Roreham. Smail was in* the Trades Hall about S.lO last night. He walked into the centre of a passage and said : vr-A] Steve, old man. I am goinc to do it <n' T -. whereupon he took a small bc-tle out of his pocket and rrank one-third of the contents. He immediately reeled back and fell on the floor. An emetic was administered a* soon as possible and Smail was removed to the hnsnital in a serious condition. In a statement to the police Smail said— "I took it and I'll take ffc again. I am not wanted. A man haa to work for 2s ]ld a dav." Smail haa since improved and is expected to recover.
