He declared that it was an undemocratic Bill that gave a vote to every woman with property, but barely a tenth of the working women had any. He and Mr Churchill were denounced as traitors to the women's cause, because they did not support a measure which the suffragists of Australia and New Zealand would scornfully reject. He doubted if women really wanted the franchise.
